Port Brewing Midnight Sessions Lager

Bought this without even reading the label, as Port's reputation precedes them. (There was also an IPA, but this seemed like a safer bet). Just found out that it's a schwarzbier, which is usually a pleasant thing.

Smells like roasty coffee; more like a stout, really. Big roasty stout-like flavor, too, but without all the roundness of an ale. It's got that lager crispness, and a slightly metallic finish. Actually, on further sips, this is much thicker than other schwarzbiers I've had.

No regrets on this impulse buy: this is solidly put together, and quite drinkable. Recommended if you like the style, or are interested in a dry stout competitor.

Midnight Sessions is a great beer. One of the things many people don't know about it is that it's made from the second runnings of Lost Abbey Serpent Stout. It's a lot of fun to try them together and see how one good beer becomes another good beer in the hands of a talented brewer.

I had read that when trying to look up information about it, but as Port's site doesn't even mention this beer(! It's in bottles, not just a one-off, and so ought to be mentioned), I didn't include that.

And I've not had the Serpent Stout, but this certainly recommends it! (Actually, I'm not sure I've had anything from Lost Abbey, though not for lack of desire on my part - I just haven't seen it around when I'm looking.)
